WHAT IS SOAPSTONE
Scientifically known as steatite, soapstone is a metamorphic rock from the talc schist family. It is an excellent material for kitchen utensils, due to its ability to retain and diffuse heat, as well as its malleability, which allows it to be molded into various shapes.
Several types of steatite are found in nature, but only one of them can be considered suitable for culinary purposes. This is a gray-colored type that, thanks to the peculiar balance of its chemical composition, gives soapstone the physical properties so appreciated by all professional chefs.
The best quality steatite, used in the manufacture of our cookware lines, is composed of:
- 40-50% magnesite, which makes it resistant and compact;
- 40-50% talc, which makes it malleable to shape;
- 5-8% chlorite, in addition to a small percentage of other minerals.
